I know you can usually use both. "Minua kiinnostaa hiihtäminen" "Olen kiinnostunut hiihtämisestä".
But is there a difference? Even a small one?

I think there is a small difference, because "Se kiinnostaa minua" form means something like: "It interests me". ("It" acts on "you"), whereas the other form "Olen kiinnostunut siitä." means "I am interested in it." ("I" am doing the action here).
